Canaries Swept in Doubleheader

Sioux Falls, SD - On Saturday night, the Canaries (11-23) were swept in a doubleheader that extended into the early hours of Sunday morning. The Lincoln Saltdogs (24-11) defeated the Canaries 5-1 in game one and 7-5 in game two.

In game one, the Saltdogs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Ryan Priddy hit a two-out single to score Josh Patton.

The lead became 3-0 when Cory Harris singled home Paul Powell and Jay Yaconetti in the top of the fourth inning.

Abner Arroyo hit a solo home run, his sixth blast of the year, to provide the Canaries only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth and make it 3-1.

The Saltdogs added two more in the fifth when Bryan Warner hit a solo home run. Pichi Balet doubled and scored on Powell's sacrifice fly for the 5-1 final.

In game two, the Saltdogs went ahead with a lead the Canaries would never overcome. Balet singled home Harris, Brian Cooley drove in a pair, and Yaconetti drove in a fourth run for an early 4-0 advantage.

The Canaries got two back in the bottom of the first. Dustin Delucchi reached on an error, Ralph Santana singled, and Abner Arroyo walked to load the bases. Delucchi scored when Chad Hermansen walked and Santana scored when Angelo Fermin grounded into a fielder's choice. After one inning it was 4-2.

Lincoln added a run in the second when Balet singled home Werner, and a run in the third on Cory Harris' seventh home run of the season. After three innings, the Saltdogs led 6-2.

Jason Sugden doubled home Chris Hall in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-3, but the Saltdogs responded in the top of the sixth when Cory Harris hit his second home run of the game for a 7-3 lead. Chad Hermansen hit a home run in the bottom of the seventh to score Dennis Anderson for the 7-5 final.

Sean Donlin (0-3) and Tony Cogan (2-1) suffered the losses for the Canaries. Lindsay Gulin (6-1) and Brian Rodaway (3-1) picked up the wins for Lincoln.

The teams meet in the fourth game of the series on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. The game will feature the Canaries "Father's Day Grill Competition."
