Canaries lose see-saw battle, 11-7

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (11-23) lost a see-saw battle with the Lincoln Saltdogs (24-11) on Sunday afternoon by a score of 11-7.

The Canaries were the first to get on the board. A two-run homer by Chad Hermansen, his sixth of the season, and RBI singles by Jason Sugden and Dustin Delucchi put the Canaries up 4-0 in the bottom of the second.

The Saltdogs answered in the third. Cory Harris doubled and scored to make it 4-1 when Kevin Sullivan's groundball to third base was thrown away by Chris Hall.

The Saltdogs rallied in the sixth beginning with a solo homer by Bryan Warner. With the bases loaded, Paul Powell was hit by a pitch to make it 4-3. Jason Cierlik came into the game for the Canaries, but he could not prevent Jay Yaconetti from doubling to score two runs and put Lincoln ahead 5-4.

The Canries went back in front in the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded Dennis Anderson hit a two out single to score Chris Weber and Jason Sugden for a 6-5 lead.

The Saltdogs went back in front in the top of the seventh. Bryan Warner doubled, and Pichi Balet singled him home to tie the game 6-6. Josh Patton followed with a single to score Warner and make it 7-6.

The Canaries tied the game, 7-7, in the bottom of the seventh when Chad Hermansen scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by Chris Weber. Hermansen was 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI on the game.

Lincoln went ahead to stay in the eighth. Warner hit a bases loaded single to score a run and Balet followed with another single to drive in two more for a 10-7 lead. The Saltdogs added one more in th eninth when Paul Powell scored on Yaconetti's sacrifice fly for the 11-7 final.

Chris Russ (1-1) took the win for the victorious Saltdogs. Jason Cierlik (2-3) took the loss for the Canaries.

The Canaries will be on the road on Tuesday when they visit the Sioux City Explorers. The series moves to the Birdcage on Thursday for a "Visor Giveaway" by the Midwest Dairy.
