St. Joseph, MO - The Sioux Falls Canaries swept a Wednesday afternoon twinbill with the St. Joe Blacksnakes, winning game one of the double-header 5-3 and game two 2-0 in 11 innings.
In game one of the doubleheader, Ben Van Iderstine was two-for-four with two RBI as the Canaries took a 5-3 win from the Blacksnakes.
The Canaries drew first blood in the top of the fourth inning. Wil Quintana walked and Will Smith doubled to put two in scoring position for Ben Van Iderstine. Van Iderstine drove them both home with a single to give the Canaries a 2-0 lead. Matt Imwalle followed with a single to again put runners on second and third, and this time it was Angelo Fermin driving them in with a single to extend the Canaries lead, 4-0.
St. Joe got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. David Fowler led the inning off with a double and advanced to third base on an infield single by Andy Wilson, before scoring when Jake Whitesides grounded into a double play. The inning cut the Canaries lead to three runs, 4-1.
The Birds got the run back in the fifth inning. Quintana doubled and scored on a single by Imwalle to improve the Canaries lead, 5-1.
The Blacksnakes plated one in the bottom of the sixth inning. David Fowler doubled and moved to third base on an infield single by Andy Wilson. Fowler came in to score on a wild pitch by Aaron Garrison. The run cut the Canaries lead to three, 5-2.
Curt Miaso hit his first homer of the season in the seventh inning to cut the Canaries lead to two runs, 5-3. Jerrod Fuell came back to strike out two and close out the 5-3 win for his American Association leading fourth save of the season.
Jeff Landing (2-0) got the win for the Canaries pitching 5.1 innings and giving up one run on five hits while striking out six Blacksnakes. St. Joe starter David Glick (0-1) suffered the loss.
The second game of the doubleheader featured a pitchers duel between Canaries starter Ryan Ford and Blacksnakes pitcher Andrew Edwards. Through the scheduled seven innings, neither man had allowed a run as the game went to extra innings in a scoreless tie. Ford pitched seven shutout innings giving up five hits and one walk while striking out seven. Edwards pitched eight shutout innings giving up five hits and two walks while striking out two. Neither man would get a decision as the game was decided by the bullpens in extra innings.
It wasn't until the 11th inning that the scoreless tie was finally broken on a two-run homer by Trevor Lawhorn. Lawhorn's second homer of the season gave the Canaries the runs they needed for a 2-0 win.
Lenny Bays (1-0) pitched four shutout innings of one-hit relief to get the win for the Canaries. Vinnie DeChristofaro (0-1) suffered the loss.
The Canaries will now head to Sioux City where they will play a four-game series over the weekend. The Birds return home on Tuesday, May 22 to host the Fort Worth Cats in a three-game set, that begins with "AAA South Dakota Member Appreciation" featuring the #6 Dave Ragan Ford Fusion Showcar.
