
Canaries Sweep Snakes

Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (5-4) swept their series against the St. Joe Blacksnakes (1-8) with a 4-2 win at the Birdcage on Wednesday night. The sweep was the Canaries fourth of the year against St. Joe.
St. Joe bit first with a double by Jake Whitesides to get the first inning going. Andy Wilson followed with a double to bring Whitesides in, and give the Snakes an early 1-0 lead.
The Canaries took that run back in the bottom of the first inning. Cameron Coughlan led the Birds off with a single and advanced to second on a walk by Juan Figueroa. Will Smith grounded into a fielder's choice, placing runners on the corners. Ben Van Iderstine singled up the middle to bring Coughlan in from home third, tying the game 1-1.
Both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the eighth inning. Will Smith singled and Van Iderstine walked to put runners on the bases for Abner Arroyo. Arroyo tripled to deep center field, scoring Will Smith and Van Iderstine to give the Canaries a 3-1 advantage. A throw aimed to get Arroyo out at third ended was off-line and the error on shortstop Casey Gordon allowed Arroyo to come home and score. At the end of the eighth inning, the Canaries led by three, 4-1.
The Snakes rallied in the top of the ninth inning. Gordon doubled and Whitesides reached on an error by Matt Imwalle. Dustin Yount singled allowing Gordon to cross home plate but that was the only run the Snakes would get, ending the game, 4-2 Canaries.
Kelly Casares (2-1) earned his second win of the season pitching two innings in relief. Starter Lenny Bays pitched went six innings deep, allowed one run on three hits and struck out 10 batters. Jerrod Fuell earned his league-leading 14th save of the season. Andrew Edwards (1-8) suffered the loss for St. Joe.
The Canaries travel to Lincoln for a four game series before the All-Star break. The All-Star game takes place at Sioux Falls Stadium on July 17th. The Canaries return to the Birdcage on Thursday, July 19 against the Lincoln Saltdogs.
