St. Paul Saints News Release
PENSACOLA, FL (July 11, 2007) - A two hour rain delay, a three plus hour game, an ejection, a pitcher batting and after all that the St. Paul Saints lost to the Pensacola Pelicans 7-5 on Wednesday night at Pelican Park.
With Ben Thomas the second batter of the game having a 2-2 count on him, the Florida rains came and halted play for nearly two hours. When play resumed the Pelicans got to Saints starter Justin Lord in the bottom of the first. Chris Reynolds reached on an error, moved to third on a single by Ricardo Cordova and scored on Napolean Calzado's RBI single.
The Pelicans added two in the fourth on an RBI single from Bo Williams and a two out RBI single by Cesar Aranguren.
They took a 4-0 lead in the fifth on a lead off triple by Cordova and an RBI single from Calzado.
The Saints added three runs in the sixth when Ryan Priddy led off with a single. With two outs Adam Bourassa drove home Priddy with a double. Marcel Longmire added an RBI single and Brian Sprout drove home Longmire with an RBI double to make it 4-3.
In the bottom of the sixth Michael DeCarlo doubled and then the fireworks ensued. Nathan Warrick dropped down a sac bunt which Justin Lord fielded and threw to Skip Adams at first who was backing up to get to the bag. He touched the bag and was run over by Warrick. Adams walked to the mound after the play, the home plate umpire, Terrance Mobley, walked towards the mound and after a short conversation tossed Adams. The Saints had no bench guys and were forced to bring in their DH Kevin Carlson to play defense and it meant the Saints had to have a pitcher hit. Pitcher Sean Kramer would eventually hit in the eighth and strike out looking.
In the seventh the Saints made it 5-4 when Carlson had a one out single. Scooter Jordan singled him to second and Thomas singled Carlson home.
The Pelicans scored two insurance runs in the eighth on a two-run, two out double by Chris Reynolds.
It proved costly because the Saints scored a run in the ninth on an RBI single from Priddy, but with the tying run at the plate Jordan and Thomas struck out to end the game.
The Saints head to Fair Grounds Field to take on the Shreveport Sports at 7:05 p.m. The Saints head LHP Jake Postlewait (6-5, 3.10). The game can be heard on KBGY 107.5 FM.
