
Canaries sweep Snakes, 13-4

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (5-4) routed the St. Joe Blacksnakes (5-5) by a score of 13-4 on Thursday night to complete a three-game sweep.
The Canaries drew first blood in the top of the first inning. Ralph Santana singled and stole second base, his 25th swipe of the season. Chad Hermansen followed with his 12th home run of the season for a 2-0 lead.
The Blacksnakes were able to get one in the third. Three straight singles loaded the bases and an error by Ralph Santana on a gound ball by Jake Whitesides scored Misha Dworken to make it 2-1.
Abner Arroyo tallied his tenth home run of the year in the fourth and the Canaries extended their lead to 3-1. The inning continued with singles by Dennis Anderson and John Schmitz. A double by Chris Hall scored Dennis Anderson and both John Schmitz and Hall scored on a single by Anthony Monegan. The four run inning put the Canaries ahead 6-1.
The Blacksnakes got their final three runs of the night in the fifth when Scooter Jordan singled and scored on a triple by Denver Kitch. Kitch then scored on a sacrifice fly by Jake Whitesides. Wil Quintana brought home the final run on his league leading thirteenth home run of the season. After five, the Canaries lead 6-4.
The Canaries added two more runs in the sixth to make it 8-4. Schmitz drew a walk and Hall got on with an error. A bunt single by Chris Weber and an error that followed scored Schmitz. Anthony Monegan recorded his third RBI of the night, singling home Chris Hall.
Edgard Clemente added one more for the Canaries when he belted his first home run of the season in the seventh inning for a 9-4 lead.
The Blacksnakes fate was sealed in the eighth. A double by Hermansen scored Ralph Santana for a 10-4 lead. Hermansen then scored on a single by Anderson. With nobody covering Anderson took off for second base, and the race to second allowed Arroyo to score. Finally Schmitz brought home Anderson with a single for the 13-4 final.
Matt Koziara (2-1) picked up the win allowing four runs on eight hits in seven innings of work and Andrew Edwards (1-3) suffered the loss for St. Joe.
The Canaries will hit the road Friday for a three-game series with the Lincoln Saltdogs. The Birds then head to the mid-season All-Star break. First baseman Abner Arroyo and catcher Dennis Anderson will travel to El Paso, TX to represent the American Association in the league's All-Star Game against the Canadian-American League. The Canaries will host the Shreveport Sports July 20-22 at the Birdcage.
