Sioux City, IA - The Sioux Falls Canaries (1-3) scored three early runs, but fell victim to nine unanswered tallies by the Sioux City Explorers (3-1) in Friday night's 9-3 loss at Lewis & Clark Park in Sioux City.

The Canaries loaded the bases in the first inning on a walk to Kennard Bibbs, a single by Grant Richardson, and a bunt single by Josh Patton. Beau Torbert followed by grounding into a fielder's choice that scored Bibbs for a 1-0 lead. Ben Van Iderstine then came to the plate with runners on the corners. Van Iderstine singled to plate Richardson and the Canaries led by a pair, 2-0. Paul Smyth capped off the scoring in the inning with a single to bring in Torbert. After a half inning, the Canaries led 3-0.

Sioux City came back to tie the game in the bottom of the first. Jason Tuttle reached on an infield single and advanced to third on a single by Nick McCoola. With runners on the corners and nobody out, Alex Llanos singled to score Tuttle. After Chris Grossman walked to load the bases, Juan Camacho singled to score both McCoola and Llanos. After one inning the game was tied, 3-3.

The Explorers took the lead in the second inning after loading the bases for the second straight inning. Dustin Jones and Derek Schermerhorn led off the inning with back-to-back singles, and Tuttle followed with a bunt single to fill the bases. With the bases loaded and nobody out, McCoola grounded into a double play, and Jones scored. After two innings, the Explorers led 4-3.

Sioux City got two more in the third inning. Chris Grossman and Juan Camacho started the inning with back-to-back singles. Gabriel scored on a two-out bunt single by Dustin Jones, and after three innings the Canaries trailed 6-3.

The Explorers plated two more in the fourth inning on Chris Grossman's fifth home run of the season, and one last run in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Schermerhorn. Sioux City's nine runs went unanswered as the Canaries suffered a 9-3 loss on Independence Day.
