Canaries Stumble In Series Opener With Saints, 10-1

Sioux Falls, SD - A season-high crowd of 3,469 turned out to the Birdcage on Friday night, where the Sioux Falls Canaries (23-11) could not come up with the runs to come back from an early inning deficit in a 10-1 loss to the St. Paul Saints (18-15).

The Saints seized a big lead in the first inning. Scooter Jordan led off with a walk then stole second base. Brent Krause singled, scoring Jordan. Saints led, 1-0. Marcel Longmire reached on an error committed by Matt Imwalle, which also saw Krause advance to second. Brian Sprout followed with a single, advancing Longmire and scoring Krause to give the Saints a 2-0 lead. Adam Bourassa reached on a fielder's choice and Skip Adams, Alex Fonseca, Ryan Priddy, and Scooter Jordan strung together singles which opened the door for Longmire, Bourassa, Adams, and Fonseca to cross home plate. After sending 11 batters to the plate in the first inning, the Saints led 6-0.

St. Paul added to their lead in the sixth inning. Matt Brunson walked to start the inning. Sprout reached on Imwalle's second of three errors on the night. After the error Bourassa came to the plate and singled to score Brunson and give the Saints a 7-0 lead.

The Saints scoring did not stop. In the eighth inning, Krause led off with a walk, and Longmire followed with a double to move Krause to third. Sprout singled to left, scoring Krause for an 8-0 lead. Bourassa reached base on a fielder's choice, scoring Longmire, and putting the Saints ahead, 9-0.

In the bottom of the eighth, James Shanks hit his sixth home run of the season to put the Canaries on the board. At the end of eight, the Birds were trailing 9-1.

Saints took the run back in the top of the ninth. Scooter Jordan walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Sean Donlin. Jordan's run was the final of the game in the Saints 10-1 drubbing of the Canaries.

Micah Posey (1-5) suffered the loss for the Canaries. In 5.2 innings, Posey gave up seven runs, two earned, on eight hits and four walks. Saints' Pitcher, Charlie Ruud (4-2) held the Birds quiet through 7.2 innings, allowing only one run on five hits and striking out seven Canaries batters.

The Canaries will send Pat Mahomes to the mound on Saturday night as they take on the Saints in the middle game of the series. Saturday is "Cap Giveaway" presented by Modern Woodmen of America.
