Coastal Bend Aviators News Release

The Coastal Bend Aviators were unable to gain ground against the division-leading El Paso Diablos, losing both games of a doubleheader by 10-3 and 9-6 scores.

In the first game Pedro Flores had an uncharacteristicly poor performance allowing 7 earned runs on 12 hits in 5 innings and fell to 2-3 on the season. El Paso starter Josh Neitz went the distance in the scheduled 7 inning contest allowing just 2 earned runs on 8 hits to improve to 2-3. The Diablos tallied 15 hits and left only six men on base while scoring 10 times.

The second game saw the Aviators take a 3-1 lead on Bryon Smith's 3 run blast in the first inning, his third roundtripper in his last three games. In the second, Coastal Bend had runners at second and third with one out. Brian Fryer's groundout to second scored JD Foust and Matt Spencer's single scored Steve Ketter to increse the lead to 5-2. But in the top of the third after Wlater Olmstead had walked and Logan Wood singled, El Paso's Casey Clary belted a three run homer to tie it at 5. In the bottom of the fourth with men at second and third and one out, Diablos third baseman Juan Camacho lifted a sacrifice fly to center and Albenis Machado scored as El Paso grabbed a 6-5 advantage. Walter Olmstead followed with a single plating Kory Drew to push the lead to 7-5. The Diablos would tack on two more in the fifth and closer Ned Darley came on in the seventh to retire the Aviators in order and earn his 10th save.

Justin Knoff earned his first victory of the season (1-0). Tim Haines took the complete game loss for Coastal bend (0-2) The losses leave the Aviators 7.5 games back of El Paso and drop their overall record to 14-20. Game three of the four game series is Saturday night at 8:05pm and can be heard locally on KOPY 1070 AM or online.

Notes: El Paso scored in 9 consecutive innings across the two games of the doubleheader. The second game was the makeup game for a rainout at Fairgrounds Field on May 27th. As such, the Aviators played the game as the home team. Brian Fryer had his 15 game hitting streak snapped in the second game.
