Canaries Sign Catcher Matt Hitt

SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries have signed catcher Matt Hitt to a contract and placed infielder Shelby Ford on the disabled list.

Hitt, 24, was originally signed by the Toronto Blue Jay's as an undrafted free agent in 2013 after spending two collegiate seasons at Eastern Michigan University.

Hitt spent part of the 2013 season playing for Toronto's Low-A affiliate, the Vancouver Canadians, making 37 plate appearances in 14 games.

In two seasons at Eastern Michigan, Hitt appeared in 87 games while posting a .232 batting average with 15 doubles, seven homeruns and 50 RBI.

Shelby Ford was placed on the DL after sustaining a concussion while playing second base in Sioux City. Ford has been the biggest offensive threat for the Canaries in 2014, posting a .336 batting average with seven doubles, six homeruns and 19 RBI in 30 games.

The Canaries return to Sioux Falls on Friday night opening up a seven-game homestand with a three-game series against their North Division rivals, the St. Paul Saints. Friday is AARP Night with the Canaries as they battle the St. Paul Saints. The first 3,000 fans will receive a Canaries/AARP koozie, compliments of the South Dakota AARP.

A member of AARP will be throwing out the first pitch and the Canaries will be honoring AARP members in the Sioux Falls area. There will also be fireworks after the game on Friday night presented by Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital, Orthopedic Institute & All-Star Fireworks.
