Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, IN- The Gary South Shore RailCats woke up with a new first baseman on Wednesday adding to a roster that had made 10 changes during the current home stand. The RailCats got contributions from some of their new pieces but it was their core group led by catcher Ryan Babineau and his 2 for 4 and 3 RBI night that helped Gary defeat the Sioux Falls Canaries 9-6 Wednesday night at US Steel Yard. Mix in some solid pitching from Stephen Bougher and the RailCats made it look routine in winning their second game in a row.
The RailCats took the lead in the bottom of the first inning when Danny Pulfer was hit by a pitch and Drew Martinez walked off of Sioux Fall starter Joe Bircher. Zac Mitchell then put down a successful sac bunt to move the runners up for Ryan Babineau. The former UCLA Bruin drove both runs in with a double and it was 2-0 RailCats.
In the second once again the Cats got to the lefty Bircher. Derek Smith and Josh Romanski both singled back to back to start the inning. Drew Muren who was playing in his sixth game for the RailCats stepped up and drove home Smith to make it 3-0 and also moving Romanski to third. Danny Pulfer then put down a perfect sac bunt on a safety squeeze to make it 4-0.
Gary then added another two runs in the fourth again getting back to back singles this time from Danny Pulfer and Drew Martinez. Zac Mitchell then brought home Pulfer to make it 5-0 but was out trying to stretch the single to a double for out number two. Babineau then walked to put runners at first and third. Adam Humes who just joined the RailCats knocked in Martinez to make it 6-0.
Stephen Bougher was in command from the beginning for the RailCats allowing only one base runner on a first inning single by A.J. Kirby-Jones over the first five innings. At one point Bougher sat down 12 in a row on the way to his third win (3-2). The Canaries finally got something going in the sixth getting three runs on a pair of walks and a three run homer by Kirby-Jones to cut the lead to 6-3.
The RailCats would get two of those runs right back in the next half inning off of reliever Chase Boruff. Drew Martinez who went 4 for 5 adding to his team leading 16 multi-hit games doubled to start the inning. Zac Mitchell followed with a walk then Ryan Babineau picked up his third RBI of the night with a single and it was 7-3 RailCats. Wally Backman pinch hit into a double play but Mitchell scored from third and the score was 8-3.
The Canaries added three in the top of the ninth off of Coleman Stephens one of which was unearned in the RailCat win. Bircher was charged with the loss (1-4) while the Cats sent their winning streak to two games. The RailCats can go for the series win Thursday night at 7:10 pm with RHP Ben Moore (4-1, 2.58) taking the mound for Sioux Falls while the Railcats will send out RHP Morgan Coombs. The game can be heard on the RailCats Broadcast Network on WEFM and online at RAILCATSBASEBALL.COM.
