Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS - The Wichita Wingnuts managed to outhit the Grand Prairie AirHogs 14 to 13 on Thursday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, but in the column that matters most the Airhogs ran away with a 10-3 victory. Right-fielder Frazier Hall paced the AirHogs attack by going 3-4 with two doubles, a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored.
The start of the game was a sign of things to come and that wasn't a great thing for the Wingnuts (27-14). After striking out Jimmy Mojica to open the game, Capra injured his leg trying to beat Alex Nunez to first base on a bunt single. The left-hander had to be taken off the field on a cart and did not return. Alan Williams (2-3) was forced to make an unexpected early appearance and held his own in the first inning, escaping with no damage. The second inning wasn't quite so easy. He allowed a leadoff double to Hall and walked Brian Myrow and Vince DiFazio to load the bases with one away. After Eric Baker flew out to shallow center, Jimmy Mojica made sure the inning wasn't fruitless, doubling home a pair to go up 2-0.
Andres Rodriguez singled to score Abel Nieves, who led off the third with a triple, to push the lead to 3-0. The Wingnuts climbed closer in the bottom half of the inning, as Jake Kahaulelio scored a pair on a single with the bases loaded to make the score 3-2. Although runners remained on first and second with nobody out, the Wingnuts would not score anything else in the inning against AirHogs' starter Jason Jarvis (1-1).
Both teams scored again in the fifth inning, but it was Grand Prairie who was able to stretch the lead a little bit further. Hall again came up big, hitting a two-run blast out the opposite way to left, his third of the year, to make it 5-2. Brent Clevlen gave the Wingnuts their final run of the night with an RBI single off of Jarvis in the home half which briefly cut the AirHogs (16-24) advantage to two.
The AirHogs pulled away with a big four run seventh inning. Mike Zouzalik started the frame and handed it over to lefty Alex Hinshaw, who had yet to allow a run this season, with one out and a runner first. Hinshaw faced six hitters and gave up two hits, hit a batter, and walked three before he was replaced by Daniel Bennett. Bennett allowed an inherited runner to score, but none of his own. By the time the dust had settled the Wingnuts had fallen behind 9-3.
The visitors added one more in the eighth to finish the scoring on another double by Hall. The outfielder's third extra-base hit scored Nunez.
The Wingnuts used six pitchers out of the bullpen and all of them aside from Matt Nevarez, who threw the ninth, allowed at least one run. Four AirHogs had multiple hits in the game, while the Wingnuts had three players with more than one hit: Clevlen, Ryan Khoury, and Chris McClendon.
The Wingnuts will hit the road to play a weekend series against the Saltdogs in Lincoln. In Friday night's 7:05 p.m. start, RHP Tim Brown (5-2) will pitch for Wichita and RHP Zach Varce (2-2) will take the hill for Lincoln.
