Canaries score seven unanswered to win 7-5

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (3-2) rallied for seven unanswered runs to pick up a win over the Pensacola Pelicans (3-2) in front of a crowd of 3,084 on opening night at the Birdcage. Patrick Reilly went four-for-four with an RBI and three runs scored to lead the Canaries offensively.

The Canaries fell behind early. Pensacola scored three runs in the first inning with two outs. Rafael Alverez singled and stole second base to get into scoring position for Brandon Sing. Sing singled to score Alverez for a 1-0 lead. After Matt Pali walked, Cesar Aranguren doubled to score Pali and Alverez to give the Pelicans an early three-run advantage.

Pensacola added to their lead in the second. With two on Ricardo Cordova adoubled to score Will Lewis and advance Sean Gamble to third base. With the Pelicans up 4-0, Gamble tried to score on a pitch that got by Canaries catcher Paul Smyth. Gamble was thrown out at the plate, but a pitch later a passed ball allowed Cordova to score from third, and after an inning and a half the Canaries led, 5-0.

The Birds started their comeback in the bottom of the second inning. Grant Richardson walked and advanced to third on a single by Ben Van Iderstine, and scored on an error by the Pelicans third baseman. The error also allowed Van Iderstine to get to third base. Van Iderstine scored on Reilly's first hit of the night, a single to right field. Reilly got to third on the play when the right fielder, Rafael Alverez, misplayed the ball. Reilly then scored his first run of the night on a groundout by Beau Torbert. The Canaries plated three runs on two hits and two Pelicans errors to pull within a pair, 5-3.

In the fourth inning the Canaries got a run closer. Josh Patton led off the inning with a double, and advanced to third on a single by Reilly. Reilly found himself hung up between first and third on the play, and Patton tried to score. The Pelicans were able to put out Patton, but Reilly salvaged the play by getting to third base. Reilly then scored for the second time on a single by Torbert. After four innings, the Canaries trailed 5-4.

The Canaries overcame the Pelicans in the bottom of the sixth. Richardson led off with a double and took third on a wild pitch. Richardson then scored on an infield single by Van Iderstine, tying the game, 5-5. Reilly doubled to advance Van Iderstine to third, and Torbert drove them both in with a double to put the Canaries ahead, 7-5. The two-run double increased Torbert's RBI total to four on the night, seven on the season. The Birds held on for the 7-5 win.

Pat Mahomes (2-0) picked up his second win of the year. While he gave up five runs, four earned, on eight hits, Mahomes got stronger as the game went on, retiring nine of the last ten batters he faced to open the door for the Canaries comeback. Javier Garcia pitched a perfect eighth inning to set-up the save for Kris Regas who walked one before sitting the next three batters down and picking up his first save of the year. Mark Goodman (0-1) took the loss for Pensacola.

The Canaries will host the Pelicans for the middle-game in the series on Wednesday night. The game will be the Canaries annual Poster Giveaway presented by Sioux Printing, and also be the Birds first $1 Hot Dog Wednesday presented by Wimmers.
