Sioux City Explorers News Release
The Saints put 5 runs on the board in the first 3 innings as the Sioux City Explorers were blanked by St. Paul 6-0 on a chilly night at Lewis & Clark Park Tuesday.
Luis Villareal had a no-hitter through the first 4 innings while X's starter Dusty Bergman ran into control problems, giving up 5 runs, 4 earned, on 5 hits while walking 5 and striking out 4. The Saints scored once in the opening frame on a RBI double by Marcel Longmire. St. Paul scored 3 in the 2nd on a RBI single by Julius Thames and a 2 run hit by Brian Sprout. Then, Kevin Sullivan scored on a wild pitch in the 3rd.
The X's actually loaded the bases in the first inning on 3 walks by Villareal but Alex Llanos' liner was right at LF Andre Marshall. Sioux City got their first hit on a leadoff single by Chad Gabriel in the 5th and 2 more walks by Villareal loaded the bases but Nick McCoola bounced out to end the threat.
The X's left 10 men on base in the game and were 0-4 with runners in scoring position. Both teams combined for 12 walks and 18 strikeouts in the game. Gabriel had 2 hits for the X's; Paige Dumont pitched 2 perfect innings in relief, but Sioux City fell to 1-5 on the season.
The X's will try to right the ship on Wednesday night with Nick Singleton taking the mound. The Saints will counter with Justin Lord. Game time is 7:05 on a Guaranteed WINSday and a Weiner Wednesday. Tickets available by calling 277-WINS.
