The Diablos Win 5-4

David Whigham allowed just one earned run in his first career start as the El Paso Diablos squeaked past the Wichita Wingnuts 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon from Cohen Stadium.

David Whigham cruised over the first three innings. Whigham retired the first 11 batters he faced.

Chris Colton broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning. With two away, Colton blasted a solo home-run to left field giving the Wingnuts a 1-0 lead.

El Paso responded in the bottom of the fourth. The Diablos got an RBI double from Walter Olmstead and RBI singles from Alex Derhak and Bryon Smith to take a 3-1 lead.

The Wingnuts pieced together another run in the top of the fifth inning. Heath Keel reached base with one out on a throwing error by Bryon Smith. Stephen Pearson drove in Keel with a double to right field, setting the score at 3-2 El Paso.

El Paso answered right back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Walter Olmstead plated Albenis Machado on an infield single to third base for the 4-2 advantage.

Wichita took advantage of a Diablos error in the top of the seventh inning. With two outs, Felipe Del Rosario reached first base on a throwing error by Bryon Smith, which scored Michael Thompson, cutting the lead to 4-3.

The Diablos scored an extra run in the bottom of the seventh. J.D Reininger plated Albenis Machado with a single to make the lead 5-3 Diablos.

Wichita gave the Diablos a scare in the eighth inning. They loaded the bases off of reliever B.J Litchfield. Litchfield induced a crucial 6-4-3 double play off the bat of David Gates. The Wingnuts did score a run on the play, but the Diablos maintained the lead 5-4.

Chris Thompson threw a scoreless ninth inning for his second save of the season.

David Whigham (1-0) takes the victory, he threw six full innings allowing just one earned run off of three hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

Brad Davis (1-1) is the loser, he lasted six and third innings surrendering four earned runs off of 11 hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

The Diablos will take on the Wichita Wingnuts in at 10:30 AM on Wednesday morning. Josh Neitz will take the hill and be opposed by Justin Young. The game will be broadcast live at www.diablos.com with Jon Barr on the call.
