Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Lincoln, NE - The Sioux Falls Canaries (6-5) suffered a heartbreaking 3-1 defeat in a pitcher's duel with the Lincoln Saltdogs (4-7) on Saturday night at Haymarket Park. Brian Rodaway (5-2) picked up the win, striking out 10 Canaries in six innings allowing one unearned run on four hits and two walks. Jeff Blitstein pitched the final three innings allowing no runs ... for his first save of the season. Robert Barrett (1-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits in six innings.
The Canaries scored without the benefit of a hit in the first inning. Ralph Santana struck out swinging, but advanced to first base on a passed ball. Chad Hermansen followed with a fly ball that was misplayed by Saltdogs outfielder Cory Harris. The error put Hermansen on second base and Santana on third. Abner Arroyo followed with an RBI groundout to second base to put the Canaries ahead, 1-0.
The Saltdogs tied the game in the bottom of the third. Jay Yaconetti singled and scored on a single by Pichi Balet to even the score, 1-1.
Lincoln took the lead in the fourth. Josh Patton reached on an error and stole second base. Brett Cooley walked to put two runners on base for Paul Powell. Powell doubled up the left field line to score Patton and put the Saltdogs ahead, 2-1. A sacrifice fly by Jay Yaconetti scored Cooley, and after four innings the Saltdogs lead 3-1.
The Canaries were able to load the bases in the sixth and eighth innings, but were not able to get any runs in the 3-1 loss.
The teams will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday afternoon, before heading into the All-Star Break. The Canaries return home on Thursday night when they will host the Shreveport Sports at 7:05 pm.
