Pensacola Pelicans News Release
Saturday evening was a warm one, but a stiff breeze cooled things off for fans and players alike at Pelican Park as Pensacola took on Coastal Bend for the second of three games this weekend. 1,743 fans were in attendance to catch the action on the field and check out the authentic Rusty Wallace and Richard Petty cars at the park. In the Pelicans first extra-inning game of the season, Coastal Bend scored two runs in the 10th inning to win 7-5.
The Aviators got on the board first in the third when Ryan Russ, who led off the inning with a double, came around to score when Bryan Fryer singled him in with two outs in the inning.
The Pelicans tied it up and took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a combination of walks and timely hitting. Catcher Greg Stevens led off the inning with a single and after a pop out by Andrew Salvo, Rolo Avila drew a base on balls. Ed Montague grounded out, advancing the runners, and was followed by Carlos Mendoza who hit a base clearing single. After Aviator starting pitcher Pedro Flores walked the next two batters he was replaced by Brandon Pello who got Larry Bethea to pop out and end the Pelican threat, however they took a 2-1 lead.
In the sixth inning Greg Stevens hit a one out single and Salvo and Rolo followed with walks. Ed Montague came to the plate and cleared the bases with a double, giving the Pelicans a 5-2 lead. The Aviators would cut into that lead quickly as they brought three around to score in the seventh. Jack Joffrion, Ryan Russ and Jamie Landin all drove in runs as Coastal Bend collected three doubles and a single in the inning, cutting the Pelican lead to 5-4.
The Aviators completed the comeback and tied the game at five when Wilson Burwell managed to come around and score on a throwing error in the eighth. The Pelicans failed to score in the bottom of the inning and neither team scored in the ninth, forcing the game to extra innings.
In the top of the tenth Ryan Lehr led off with a double and was later brought in to score when Bryon Smith singled. In the bottom half of the inning, the Pelicans went down in order to end the game.
