ST. JOSEPH, MO-Sioux City (6-6, 30-30) jumped out to a big lead against Blacksnakes' starter Evan Thomas and held on for a 9-6 win over St. Joe (6-6, 32-28). The Explorers pounded out 10 hits, including three home runs, and knocked Thomas out while taking a 9-1 lead through five innings.
Sioux City got on the board first with three runs in the third inning, with a pair of walks starting the rally. They struck for two more in the third for a 5-0 lead on Mike Richardson's two-run home run, his seventh of the season.
St. Joe got on the board with a two-out rally in the fourth, scoring on Denver Kitch's single to get within 5-1 before the Explorers played long ball to break it open with a four-run fifth inning. Jorge Moreno and Ryan Gripp launched back-to-back home runs before back-to-back doubles and an error on St. Joe combined to blow open a 9-1 game.
But the 'Snakes rallied in the seventh as the first six hitters reached, with Jake Whitesides delivering a run-scoring hit to make it 9-2. Then, with the bases loaded, Wil Quintana doubled in all three runs.
