Canaries lose to Explorers, 12-7

Sioux Falls, SD - On Wednesday night, the Sioux Falls Canaries (14-17) lost to the Sioux City Explorers (15-17) in a high scoring 12-7 game.

The Explorers got on the board in the first. Zach Pace and Alex Llanos both singled and Pace scored on a wild pitch. Ryan Gripp doubled off-the-wall to score Llanos for to give Sioux City an early, 2-0 lead.

Zach Pace walked and Alex Llanos singled to put runners on the corners. After Llanos was replaced on first base by Jorge Moreno on a fielder's choice, Ryan Gripp followed with a single to left field to score Pace for a 3-0 lead. Jake Daubert followed with a single to score Moreno for a 4-0 lead. Kevin Henry added another single, this one to left field, Gripp scored, and Daubert followed an errant throw home by Chad Hermansen. The pair of runs put the Explorers ahead, 6-0. Henry scored on a single by Mike Richardsen to cap off the inning with a 7-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Canaries trailed 8-0 and rallied to cut the lead in half. Abner Arroyo and Bubba Smith drew consecutive walks. John Schmitz grounded into a fielder's choice and an errant throw to first base allowed Abner Arroyo to score and get the Canaries on the board. Chris Hall followed with a single to score Schmitz to make it, 8-2. After Chris Hall stole third, Anthony Monegan singled to score Hall, making it 8-3. The Canaries got their fourth run of the inning on a single by Ralph Santana.

Sioux City kept it going in the fifth, taking back two runs. Henry doubled and scored on single by JJ Burress. Burress then scored on a single by Pace, to give the Xs a 10-4 lead.

The Canaries got one back in the sixth. Schmitz singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Monegan to make it 10-5.

The Xs sealed their victory in the ninth when a triple by Moreno scored Pace, who was hit by a pitch, and Richardson, who had singled. The Canaries scored two more in the bottom of the ninth for a 12-7 loss to the Explorers.

JD Scholten (5-2) got the win for Sioux City while Aaron Garrison (5-5) suffered the loss for the Canaries. Sean Donlin held the Canaries in it in a solid relief outing, going 3.2 scoreless innings and tallying eight strikeouts.

The Canaries will host the Ft. Worth Cats tomorrow night in the first of their three-game series at the Birdcage. Tomorrow night the Canaries pay tribute to the Negro League and SD Operation Lifesaver and the SD Safety Council will be giving away a t-shirt to the first 500 kids under 12.
