
Canaries Lose Heartbreaker

Lincoln, NE - The Sioux Falls Canaries (5-6) suffered a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Lincoln Saltdogs (5-6) when an error in the bottom of the ninth inning allowed the game winning run to score.
The Canaries drew first blood for the second night in a row. Cameron Coughlan got aboard with a bunt single and advanced to third on a single by Juan Figueroa. With runners on the corners, Will Smith grounded into a double play that allowed Coughlan to score. The early run put the Canaries ahead 1-0 going into the bottom of the first inning.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Saltdogs took the lead away from the Canaries. Tony Garcia led off with a single up the middle and advanced around to third on a passed ball and a groundout. Bryan Warner singled to score Garcia and tie the game, 1-1. With two out in the inning, Josh Patton tripled to centerfield to bring home Warner and put the Saltdogs ahead, 2-1.
The Birds tied the game in the eighth inning. Ben Van Iderstine hit a one-out double to get in scoring position. Abner Arroyo hit a ground ball to the left side that was misplayed by Saltdogs third baseman Jay Yaconetti. Yaconetti's error allowed Arroyo to reach and Van Iderstine to go to third. With runners on the corners and one away, Wil Quintana came to the plate. Quintana grounded back to the pitcher, but the Saltdogs were unable to turn a double play. Van Iderstine scored on the fielder's choice and the Canaries tied the game, 2-2.
The tie game set the stage for the Saltdogs dramatic win in the bottom of the ninth. Lincoln loaded the bases when Corey Harrington singled and Tony Garcia and Pichi Balet walked. With the bases loaded and one out, Bryan Warner came to the plate. Warner grounded to the right side, and Canaries second baseman Cameron Coughlan fielded the ball with a chance to force out Harrington at the plate. Coughlan threw the ball away, and Harrington scored to give Lincoln a 3-2 win.
Pat Mahomes received no decision. He gave up two runs on eight hits in eight innings of work. Kelly Casares (2-2) gave up the unearned run in the bottom of the ninth inning to take the loss for the year. Mark Roberts (5-1) pitched a perfect ninth inning and got the win for Lincoln.
The Canaries and Saltdogs will play the third game of the four-game series on Saturday night. The first pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
On Tuesday night, the Sioux Falls Canaries will host the 2007 American Association All-Star Game presented by Sanford Health, Lithia Dodge of Sioux Falls, Chevrolet of Sioux Falls, Argus Leader Media, and First Premier bank & Premier Bankcard. The Birdcage gates open at 4:30 p.m., with the All-Star Skills Competition beginning at 5:15 p.m. and the opening ceremonies taking place at 7:00 p.m.
