
Canaries Get Routed 16-3

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (21-23) gave up 18 hits to the Sioux City Explorers (24-20) in a 16-3 loss on Tuesday night at the Birdcage.
The Explorers came out of the gate swinging scoring four runs in the first inning. Nick McCoola and Jake Daubert hit back-to-back singles and the bases were filled when Jorge Moreno walked. Alex Llanos drove them all home with his fifth homer of the season putting the Explorers up 4-0.
The Explorers added to their lead in the third inning. McCoola led off with a single and advanced to second on a walk by Daubert. Moreno hit a double to deep left center field, allowing McCoola to score for a 5-0 lead. With two outs and runners in scoring position, Julian Benavidez singled up the middle, allowing Daubert and Moreno to cross home giving the Explorers a 7-0 advantage.
Sioux City tacked on one more in the top of the fourth. Pete Pirman doubled and came around to score on a single up the middle by Daubert. After three and a half, the Explorers led, 8-0.
The Canaries got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Casey Gordon led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Orlando Miller singled up the middle, driving in Gordon, and making it an 8-1 game.
The Explorers took that run back and more in the sixth inning. Ramon Navarro led off with a walk and came around to score on a double by Pirman, 9-1. Pirman advanced to third on a wild pitch and McCoola filled first base on a walk. Daubert hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, allowing Pirman to cross home plate, 10-1. Llanos and Moreno walked, loading the bases for Brandon Jones. Jones hit the second grand slam of the game, his seventh home run of the year, to give the Explorers a 14-1 advantage.
Sioux City kept with their scoring ways in the eighth inning. Llanos singled and Jones hit his second homer of the night to put the Explorers up 16-1.
The Canaries got a few runs in the bottom of the ninth. Gordon singled through the right side and Miller walked putting runners on first and second. Gordon and Miller moved into scoring position on a groundout by Tim Marks. Juan Figueroa singled to bring Gordon home and Shanks singled pushing Miller across the plate to give the Canaries the 16-3 final.
Alexander Francisco (10-6) won his tenth game of the season pitching six innings allowing only one run on five hits. Jeff Landing (6-5) suffered the loss for the Birds. Nick Cebula earned his first save of the season pitching the final three innings.
The Canaries and Explorers play the rubber match Wednesday night at the Birdcage. 1,000 random fans will receive a "George McGovern Bobblehead Giveaway" presented by Orion Financial Corp.
