Chris Valencia's sacrifice fly to left brough in Ford and cut the Explorers' lead to 3-1. In the 6th, the Canaries took the lead 4-3 on Kirby-Jones's three-run homer, scoring Brandon Jones and Shelby Ford who had each singled. The Birds would tack on one more run in the inning on Stephen Branca's infield single with two outs, which scored Carlos Mendez and gave the Canaries a 5-3 lead.

Erick Gonzalez took over for the Canaries in the 7th and retired his first five hitters before hitting Tom Mendonca and walking Amos Ramon consecutively with two outs in the 8th. Manager Steve Shirley summoned Alan DeRatt out of the bullpen for a four-out save, but Dillon Usiak promptly hit a double off the right-field wall to hand the lead back to Sioux City. Todd Jennings followed with an RBI single to score Usiak and the Canaries trailed 7-5 by the end of the inning.
