Saints Tie Franchise Record for Most Runs Allowed in Inning, Lose 14-5

ST. PAUL, MN - When the 2014 season is over the Rockland Boulders will own the St. Paul Saints record book. They etched their name on May 27 with the largest margin of defeat, 17 runs, and on Saturday night they once again added their name by scoring 10 runs in the sixth inning, tying a Saints franchise record for most runs allowed in an inning. It all added up to a 14-5 Saints loss in front of 5,991.

The Saints actually jumped out to a 4-1 lead after five innings and Saints starter Cole Nelson looked like he had figured out how to stop the Boulders offense. In the sixth, however, the Boulders sent 15 men to the plate, collected nine hits, one shy of the Saints franchise record and scored 10 runs. Nelson gave up an RBI single to Jerod Edmondson and an RBI double to Steve Nyisztor that cut the Saints lead to 4-3. With one out Nelson gave up a single to Stephen Cardullo and departed for reliever Mikey Mehlich. He failed to record an out while facing seven batters. With the bases loaded Mehlich hit Sean O'Hare to force in a run and tie the game at four. The next three hitters all collected RBI hits, with Matt Nandin adding an RBI single, Antone DeJesus tacking on a two-run double and Ryan Stovall a two-run single that made it 9-4. Mehlich would face two more hitters before giving way to R.J. Seidel. He retired the first man he faced, but gave up a two-run single to Cardullo to make it 11-4. The 10 run sixth tied a record that was accomplished two others times against the Saints once on May 26, 2007 vs. Sioux Falls in the fifth inning and the other on June 17, 2008 at Sioux City in the fourth inning.

With the Saints trailing 1-0 in the fourth Jake Taylor led off with a single. He moved to second on a passed ball, went to third on a ground out and scored on Evan Bigley's groundout to tie the game at one. Henry Wrigley then crushed a homer over the left field wall, his eighth of the season, to give the Saints a 2-1 lead. Wrigley finished the night 3-4 with a double, homer, two RBI and a run scored.

In the fifth Taylor roped a two-run double to center giving the Saints a 4-1 lead.

The lone drama late in the game came from Bigley as he needed until his final at bat to extend his hitting streak to 12 games with an infield single in the ninth.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the three game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Anthony Claggett (4-1, 1.25) against Boulders RHP Charlie Law (1-1, 6.23). Following the game the Saints will have post-game wrestling presented by the American Wrestling Federation. The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
