Canaries Claim Second Game and Series

July 1, 2009 - American Association (AA)
Pensacola Pelicans News Release

The Sioux Falls Canaries will bring brooms to tomorrow's game, winning Wednesday night 11-5. After claiming victory on Tuesday by scoring first, the Canaries jumped on the Pelicans early again tonight, putting up two runs in the top frame. The Pelicans battled in the bottom of the first, but couldn't keep up with the Canaries' offensive prowess, dropping the second game in this three game series.

Clegg Snipes took the loss tonight, starting the game and going 5.1 innings. The two runs in the first were not earned, but the other seven he gave up were. Snipes had some offense behind him in the first inning, as the Pelicans kept the game close in the bottom half.

Luis Guance walked to lead off, then advanced to third on a pickoff throw gone awry. Antoin Gray hit a groundball to shortstop that allowed Guance to score and bring the game within one. The proximity was short-lived, however, as the Canaries jumped right back on the Pelicans with a two-run second inning, and then added another in the third.

The Pelicans would not score again until the fifth, when Francisco Leandro hit a one-out single. Luis Guance followed with a single of his own. With runners on the first two bases, Antoin Gray picked up his second RBI on the night, hitting a single to center that scored Leandro. With Guance on second and Gray at first, both runners took off and swiped third and second base, respectively. The kleptomania would pay off, as Chase Burch hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Guance and brought the score to 5-3 Sioux Falls.

The Canaries erased thoughts of a comeback, however, with a five-run top of the sixth. A total of six hits (including two doubles) put the Sioux Falls lead at 10-3. The Pelicans tried to answer back in the seventh. Chase Burch walked, then moved to third when Marcos Rodriguez extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a double. An error by the leftfielder on the play would allow Burch to score, but Rodriguez would be stranded on the bases.

Another Pelican run scored in the bottom of the eighth when Dallas Christison singled. Francisco Leandro hit a two-out double that brought him in. The Canaries would have the last laugh, though.

In the top of the ninth, Jared Lemiux tallied his fourth hit in four at-bats, and it was a blast: a solo shot off the right-field foul pole to cap off the Canaries' 11-5 win.

Dallas Christison and Francisco Leandro each went 2-4 for the Pelicans, with Leandro recording the RBI-double in the eighth inning.

After Snipes was pulled in the sixth inning, Brent Solich recorded three outs. During that time he gave up one earned run on four hits, with a walk and a strikeout. Ron Hill finished the seventh inning, recording two outs with nothing on his line. Aaron Jackson pitched the eighth and ninth innings, giving up an earned run and four hits.

The Pelicans and Canaries will finish the series tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. RHP Kyle Middleton is expected to throw for Pensacola, and the Canaries will counter with RHP Travis Kane. Thursday's game is a Star-Spangled Celebration, with military personnel eligible for $5 tickets. Before the game, a homerun derby will feature Pelicans hitters against a military branch. Numerous promotions will feature military branches as well. Tickets are available at the Pelicans box office at Pelican Park (located on the campus of the University of West Florida), online at www.pensacolapelicans.com, via phone at (850) 934-8444, or in person at participating Circle K locations.
