
Saints Take Bite Out of Dogs 15-4

ST. PAUL, MN (July 1, 2009) - It will go in the books as a come from behind victory, but you wouldn't know it from the final score as the St. Paul Saints scored 13 runs over the final three innings and destroyed the Lincoln Saltdogs 15-4 on Wednesday night at Midway Stadium in front of 4,950.
In the sixth inning the Saltdogs took the lead off of Saints starter Reed Dickert who had retired 13 in a row up to that point. He gave up a lead off single to Josh Burrus, who then stole second. With one out the Saints intentionally walked Phil Hawke. Pichi Balet and Shawn McGill followed with back-to-back RBI singles putting the Saltodgs up 3-2.
The Saints regained the lead in the bottom of the inning. With Brent Krause at first and two outs Jeff Eure roped a doubled to left-center scoring Krause and tying the game at three. Andrew Schmiesing followed that with an RBI triple giving the Saints a 4-3 lead.
The flood gated opened over the next two innings as the Saints sent nine men to the plate in a five run seventh and 10 men to the plate in a six run eighth. In the seventh Steve Butler led off with a walk and moved to third on a single by Anthony Norman and he went to second on the throw to third. With one out Jason Cooper was intentionally walked and Jake Butler followed that with a strikeout. Krause cleared the bases with a double that was just out of the reach of a diving Josh Burrus in center, giving the Saints a 7-3 lead. Jeff Eure then blasted a two-run homer to left, his second of the season giving the Saints 9-3 lead.
In the eighth Steve Butler once again started the inning with a walk. Norman doubled him to third and Tony Mansolino scored Butler with a ground out. The Saints then got three consecutive RBI hits: a single from Cooper, a double by Jake Butler and a double from Krause. With two outs the Saints got an RBI double from pinch hitter Alex Kubal and Scott Knazek followed with an RBI single.
Three different Saints players collected three hits on the night: Cooper, Eure and Schmiesing. Krause went 2-4 with two doubles, four RBI and four runs scored. Nine of the 10 Saints players that batted collected at least one hit.
Dickert earned his second win of the season going 7.0 innings allowing three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out six.
The same two teams meet Thursday night in the finale of the four game series. The Saints send RHP Tom Buske (0-1, 7.88) to the mound against Saltdogs LHP Zac Cline (3-1, 4.91). The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network (check saintsbaseball.com for the channel in your area) and heard live on Relevant Radio 1330. It is a Salute to Women in the Military presented by TDS Metrocom with a postgame fireworks show.
