Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD - Laredo starter Ryan Beckman pitched a complete game shutout, and the Canaries offense could only put four hits on the board in a 6-0 loss on Saturday night at Sioux Falls Stadium.
Beckman had his best outing of the season, striking out ten Canaries' batters and threw 109 pitches over his full nine innings. The Birds only put two balls into the outfield all night, a triple off the wall in left by newcomer Darwin Perez and a flyout by Ozney Guillen. Every other batter struck out or hit the ball into the ground.
Kris Regas made his first start of the season on Saturday night. As a pitcher who has come out of the bullpen all season, he seemed to ran out of gas after 4.1 innings. He pitched well, however, surrendering four runs on nine hits and striking out two. He gave up a two-run homer in the third to Cesar Valera to break the scoreless tie at 2-0. He then gave up a leadoff double to Valera in the fifth and a second double to Zane Chavez, allowing Valera to score to push the lead to 3-0. Regas saw his day come to an end after striking out Denis Phipps for the first out of the fifth.
Dylan Thompson came in out of the Canaries bullpen and struggled early. Chavez scored on a Drew Martinez single to make it 4-0. Alvaro Rondon reached on an error by Thompson, scoring J.D. Pulfer to extend the lead to 5-0.
Both offenses went silent for most of the remainder of the game. Thompson would settle in and throw two straight 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh innings. Billy Waltrip would throw another flawless inning in the eighth. The only other scoring play came in the top of the ninth, as Chavez would tee off on a Jimmer Kennedy fastball for a solo shot to right to cap off the scoring at 6-0.
The Canaries have two straight off days on Sunday and Monday, and return to action on Tuesday in St. Paul against the Saints at 7:05 p.m. Contact the Canaries ticket office for information regarding single game or season ticket options by calling 605-336-6060 or visit the website at www.sfcanaries.com for more information.
