June 25, 2016 - American Association (AA)
Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, IN- Jarred Mederos hit a line drive to right field to complete an extra-innings comeback over the division rival Lincoln Saltdogs. The RailCats (19-16) claim sole possession of first place in the American Association Central Division with the 6-5 win over the Saltdogs (18-17).
RailCat hitters drew four walks in the bottom of the 11th to tie the Saltdogs at five runs apiece to set the table for Mederos. The shortstop fell behind 0-2 with two big cuts and readjusted to send the next pitch opposite-field for the win.
Taylor Black earned the win in relief for the RailCats and improved to 3-2. Nigel Nootbar is charged with the loss after throwing 0.1 innings and walking four batters.
Richard Castillo earned a quality start in a strong seven-inning performance. Santiago Rodriguez shined in 2.2 innings of relief in which he only allowed one hit.
The RailCats started hot by loading the bases with no outs in the 1st inning. They scored a run on a fielder's choice ground ball by Jeremy Hamilton. They didn't score again until the 6th inning.
EJ Devarie hit a triple with one out in the 9th inning and it appeared the Cats could walk off with a win. Mederos attempted a suicide squeeze bunt but couldn't make contact and Devarie was caught between the bases and tagged out.
The Saltdogs scored in the 11th on a Charley Thurber single compounded by a throwing error by right fielder Tillman Pugh. Rene Leveret hit his fifth home run of the season in the 4th inning.
The RailCats have won five straight games that have gone extra innings and are 5-2 overall in that category. They are now 4-1 against the Saltdogs on the season. This is the most games over .500 for the Cats on the year. The series clinching win means the RailCats have won four straight series.
The Central Division foes are back at it tomorrow with first pitch at 2:10 PM at US Steel Yard. Coverage begins at 1:40 on railcatsbaseball.com and later on 95.9 WEFM.
