X'S EVEN SERIES IN EXTRAS
The Wichita Wingnuts rallied back from a one-run deficit in the ninth, but the Sioux City Explorers took the middle match of the three-game series 7-6 in 10 innings last night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Down to their last strike in the bottom of the ninth, Leo Vargas kept Wichita alive with a single. The Wingnuts were down to their last strike again, when Christian Stringer tied the game with an RBI double. In the next frame however, Michael Lang led off with a double, eventually coming home to score the winning run on an error. Sioux City took the lead two batters in, with a ground out scoring Matty Johnson who had started the game with a triple. The Wingnuts drew level in the fourth on a solo homer by T.J. Mittelstaedt. Wichita took the lead in the next inning, as Vargas and Zack Cox collected RBIs, and another run scored on an error to make it 4-1. The Explorers answered right back in the fifth with a four-run frame, including the first of Lang's two homers in the game. Down by two in the eighth, Martin Medina brought Wichita within one on a sacrifice fly, setting the stage for the ninth inning.
LINK ROLLING ALONG
Right-hander Jon Link will take the mound tonight for the Wingnuts, and he comes into tonight's outing on a roll. After dropping his first two starts of the year, Link has won five straight, lasting at least seven innings in each of those outings. During this five start stretch, the veteran righty has yielded just five earned runs in 37.0 innings, chopping his ERA from 11.74 down to 3.02, which is tied for the eighth-lowest earned run average among all qualified pitchers in the league.
KEEP THE STREAK ALIVE
Since losing or splitting their first five series of the 2016 season, the Wingnuts have turned things around, entering this series against Sioux City having won five series in a row, including a pair of sweeps of the Kansas City T-Bones. To make it six straight series victories, the Wingnuts will need to win tonight's contest against the Explorers, as the two clubs have split the first two meetings. During this run, Wichita has won 13 out of their last 17 ballgames, vaulting them from the South Division basement, into a tie for first place tie with Laredo.
