Vancouver Canadians News Release
(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, BC) - After getting shut down for seven straight innings, the Vancouver Canadians (21-15) sent eleven hitters to the plate in the bottom of the 8th inning, scoring five runs to come from behind and stun the visiting Spokane Indians (12-25) on Sunday afternoon out at Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium.
Spokane RHP C.J. Edwards dazzled over his five innings of work limiting the Vancouver offense to a lone hit while striking out nine to drop his ERA to a miniscule 0.64 on the season. Reliever RHP Alec Asher went a pair of innings holding the C's offensive attack to one hit while striking out two.
Vancouver's offense lay dormant until the bottom of the 8th inning when they took advantage of an erratic RHP Josh McElwee. With the game tied, Spokane manager Tim Hulett went to his bullpen and pulled out RHP Carlos Melo who seconds later would leave a fastball out over the plate to Canadians 1B Balbino Fuenmayor who hit a double off the center field wall that scored both CF Ian Parmley and SS Jorge Flores to give Vancouver a 4-2 lead. RF Nick Baligod had drawn a walk earlier in the inning and came into count on an RBI single from 3B Kellen Sweeney who finished 1-for-3 on the day with a walk.
Canadians relievers RHP Jon Lucas (3.0IP) and RHP Marcus Stroman (2.0IP) would come in and limit the Indians attack to just three hits over their five scoreless innings with Stroman retiring all six hitters he faced in order to grab his first professional victory.
