Dust Devils Walk-Off with Win Versus Volcanoes

July 22, 2012 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Tri-City Dust Devils News Release

The Tri-City Dust Devils won their third consecutive home series and ninth straight home game Saturday night, defeating the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 5-4 in 10 innings at Gesa Stadium. The Dust Devils rallied from down 4-1 in the ninth inning to win their third straight game over the Volcanoes.

Down three runs in the bottom of the ninth, Tri-City rallied with two-outs, getting two hits, three walks, and an error from the Volcanoes as they tied the game at four. Again, with two-out in the 10th inning, the Dust Devils rallied and pushed across the game-winning run. Tri-City third baseman Alec Mehrten singled to right field, with outfielder Francisco Sosa on second base, and Sosa beat the throw home to complete the Dust Devils' comeback.

The late-inning drama was precluded by a pitcher's duel throughout the first six innings of the game. Dust Devils starting pitcher Shane Broyles had his best professional outing in his fourth start of the season. The 14th round selection by the Colorado Rockies in the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft threw six shutout innings, striking out nine and walking one while allowing four hits. Volcanoes starter Joe Biagini matched Broyles stellar outing with a quality performance of his own, allowing one hit over five shutout innings while striking out six and walking one.

Tri-City reliever Brook Hart (4-1) earned his fourth win of the season, throwing a perfect 10th inning. Salem-Keizer reliever Stephen Johnson (0-1) took his first loss of the season, blowing the save in the ninth and allowing the Dust Devils game-winning run in the tenth.

The penultimate game of the five game series between the Dust Devils and Volcanoes is Sunday night at Gesa Stadium. There will also be a youth baseball clinic before the game, thanks to Lourdes Health Network. The projected starters for the game are righty Tyler Gagnon for the Dust Devils with right-hander Joan Gregorio getting the start for the Volcanoes. First pitch is at 7:15 p.m. and gates open at 6:15 p.m.
