Brampton Steelheads News Release

Mississauga, ON - The Mississauga Steelheads played their first home game of 2020 as they returned to the Paramount Fine Foods Centre to take on the Peterborough Petes on Sunday afternoon.

The Steelheads opened the scoring early in the first period, as Harley stepped into the slot and found Nic Canade down low, beating Petes goaltender Hunter Jones. Then it was Mason McTavish, ripping a wrist shot from the top of the circle to tie the game at one. Calvin Martin skated into the offensive zone with a burst of speed, blowing past Peterborough's defence, beating Jones five hole to regain the Steelheads lead. Chas Sharpe recorded his first career OHL point on the play. William Portokalis redirected a pass from Ty Collins that snuck its way past Jones to make the score 3-1. At the end of the first, Mississauga had a two-goal lead while Kai Edmonds stopped 13/14 shots on goal (.933 SV%).

Jacob Paquette took a wrist shot from the blue line that snuck through the legs of Edmonds to cut the Steelheads lead to one, early in the second period. The Steelheads offence would not be discouraged, as James Hardie picked up the rebound on a shot from Duncan Penman to make the score 4-2. With seven seconds to go in the period, Peterborough took a delay of game penalty for shooting the puck over the glass to send Mississauga to the powerplay. Richard Whittaker banged home a rebound off a shot from James Hardie with just one second remaining to give the Steelheads a three-goal lead heading into the third period.

With the Steelheads on the powerplay, Nic Canade whacked home a rebound off a shot from Richard Whittaker for his second goal of the game. Peterborough would add one more in the dying seconds of the third off the hands of Max Grondin, to cut the Steelheads lead to 6-3. On the ensuing faceoff, it was once again Nic Canade with a snipe off the rush, for his third goal of the game and his first career hat trick. Mississauga would cruise to a victory, defeating Peterborough by a final score of 7-3.

It was an impressive win for the Steelheads, who were without their top scorers Keean Washkurak and Cole Schwindt. Nic Canade led the way, recording his first OHL hat trick and a career-high 8 shots on goal. Rookie defenceman Chas Sharpe registered two assists for his first OHL point and first career multi-point game, while James Hardie added three points (1G, 2A). Kai Edmonds backstopped the team in the win, stopping 40/43 shots on goal (.930 SV%) and an assist offensively.
