Campbell Nets Two in 4-2 Loss to Jacks

HIDALGO, Texas- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (24-34-6) fell in a tight 4-2 game to the Odessa Jackalopes (30-27-7) on Tuesday evening. The Bees received a pair of goals from defensemen Darcy Campbell, his 14th and 15th of the season. Jerad Kaufmann made 39 saves in net.

The Killer Bees had numerous chances in the first period but Odessa goalie Mike Mole continued to be a tough puzzle for the Bees to solve. The Bees fired 15 shots on Mole but he turned them all away including numerous highlight reel saves.

On the other end of the ice Jerad Kaufmann returned the favor turning away all 12 shots he faced to keep the game scoreless after one period of play.

Odessa scored a pair of goals in the second period with Todd Robinson getting the goal scoring started at the 6:52 mark. The puck was loose in front of the Odessa net and the Killer Bees collapsed towards the net. After the puck broke free Todd Robinson was beyond the bunch and was able to skate in on Kaufmann unimpeded and ripped a shot glove side.

Odessa added to their lead at the 16:52 mark with a power-play goal by Mike Ramsay. Todd Robinson fed the puck to Ramsay in the slot who one timed a shot past Kaufmann.

Odessa outshot the Bees by a 16-14 total in the second period.

Darcy Campbell cut the lead to one in the third period with his 14th goal of the season just 33 seconds into the period. Campbell skated the puck into the zone and drove towards Mole the netminder, Mole made the initial save but Campbell kept driving and helped the puck to the back of the net.

Campbell scored his second goal of the game to tie the game while the Bees were on the man advantage. Campbell shot the puck from the far side hash marks that Mole struggled to hold as it trickled through his five-hole.

Just 37 seconds after the Bees had tied the game Odessa retook the lead at Matt Gens scored his second of the season at the 7:38 mark. Gens skated into the Bees zone and took a shot from the top of the circles that seemed to be deflected on its way to the back of the net.

The Killer Bees maintain their two point lead over the Laredo Bucks for the final playoff spot inside of the Berry Conference. The Bees have two games remaining while the Bucks have three. Both teams play Friday and Saturday with the Bucks in action on Sunday to close the season.

The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees close the season with a pair of games this weekend starting with the Missouri Mavericks on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and hosting the Texas Brahmas on Saturday night to close the season.
