Montreal Alouettes News Release
Montreal, February 10th, 2005 - Montreal Alouettes' General Manager Jim Popp is thrilled to announce that the 2003 CFL Most Outstanding Player Anthony Calvillo has extended his contract for two more seasons through 2007.
''This is excellent news for our organization,'' said Jim Popp. ''With Anthony staying for at least three more years, we are guaranteed to maintain our excellence at quarterback, the most important position on the field. Anthony also provides important continuity, not only with his high level of play on the field but also with his involvement in the Montreal community where he has been greeted with open arms.''
Anthony Calvillo, 31, lives in Montreal with his spouse, Alexia, who is originally from the city. He is thrilled to continue his association with the Alouettes. ''This is a first-class organization,'' said Anthony Calvillo. ''Owners Bob and Lisa Wetenhall, President Larry Smith, General Manager Jim Popp and Head Coach Don Matthews have always taken care of me and my family. Montreal fans are the best in the CFL, and the decision to continue my career here was easy. I'm already looking forward to the season.''
Calvillo has 11 years' experience in the CFL. He began his career with the Las Vegas Posse in 1994, before moving on to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 1995. He joined the Montreal Alouettes in 1998 and fine-tuned his game behind then-starting quarterback Tracy Ham. After two seasons sharing duties with Ham, Calvillo became the starter in 2000. He has since then earned several laurels including the 2003 CFL Most Outstanding Player award, the 2002, 2003 and 2004 East Division Most Outstanding Player award and was named 2002 Grey Cup Most Outstanding Player. In 2004, he became the fourth quarterback in league history to pass for more than 6,000 yards.
Calvillo's previous contract was to expire after the 2005 season. With his new contract, he will be with the Alouettes through 2007.
