Ottawa Renegades News Release
OTTAWA â The Ottawa Renegades football club announced the signing of veteran Canadian defensive back Donnie Ruiz Thursday, the same day the team also inked American receiver Bashir Yamini to a deal. Both players committed to the squad for a one-year contract, plus an option.
Ruiz, an original Renegade, is a versatile threat in the Ottawa defensive backfield. The 26-year-old product of Wilfrid Laurier University can â and has â played cornerback, halfback and safety in his four-year CFL career. The six-foot, 200-pound native of Montreal broke into the CFL in 2001 with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, getting to the Grey Cup, before moving on to the nation's capital. His 2004 season was marred by injury, after he tore his ACL early in the campaign. Ruiz missed the final 15 weeks of the year after suffering the season-ending injury on July 2 against Edmonton.
"I'm looking forward to a new and prosperous season and I'm sure things will turn around," said Ruiz. "I'll be coming into the season with a focused approach and I know the rest of my teammates are as well."
Yamini returns to the Renegades with solid credentials. A product of the University of Iowa, the tall, six-foot-four receiver has spent time with the Dallas Cowboys and Carolina Panthers. The 27-year-old was a college standout with the Hawkeyes, not only on the football field but also in track and field - excelling in the long jump and 200-metre dash. After a brief stint in Ottawa late in the 2004 season, the speedy Yamini returns to an already deep Renegades receiver corps.
"We had him in for a look last year and we liked what we saw, so we felt the need to bring him back," said Chris McRobbie, Director of Player Personnel for the Renegades. "Bashir brings the size and speed we are looking for."
