Montreal Alouettes News Release
Montreal, February 10th, 2005 - The Alouettes' defensive front seven will remain intact, as was confirmed today when General Manager Jim Popp announced that linebacker Duane Butler has signed a two-year deal plus an option. Jim Popp also announced the contract extension of CFL All-Star guard Paul Lambert from Montreal, the Alouettes' 2003 Most Outstanding Special Teams Player, Michael Botterill, and Canadian receiver/punter Dave Stala. Lambert and Stala's new contracts will be valid through the 2007 season and Botterill's contract will be valid through 2006.
''Our agressive defence has particular requirements and Duane Butler's style fits perfectly with our system,'' said Jim Popp. ''Of course, consistency is always the key to success and Duane's return will keep our front seven intact.''
Butler will begin his third season with the Alouettes. He joined the organization in June 2003 after attending the Hamilton Tiger-Cats' training camp. In his first game with the Alouettes, Butler surprised all the experts, making five quarterback sacks. In 12 games that season, he had 39 defensive tackles, two interceptions for a total of 104 yards, and a touchdown. In 2004, he made 52 tackles, eight sacks, and had a 44-yard interception. He is 31.
Jim Popp was also happy to announce the contract extensions of Paul Lambert, Michael Botterill and Dave Stala. ''Paul, Michael and Dave are three young impact players who have already earned honours for the excellence of their play,'' he said. ''We expect even greater things from them in the next few years. All three have impressive potential.''
Lambert, 29, started his career with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2001. Since coming to Montreal in 2003, he has started 33 games including two at the centre position when Bryan Chiu was injured. He was named to the 2004 East Division and CFL All-Star teams.
Botterill, 24, will begin his third season in the league and with the Alouettes. Montreal's 2003 Most Outstanding Special Teams Player and Most Outstanding Rookie, Botterill is a key special teams player. In 2003 and 2004, he led the team with 25 and 20 special team tackles, respectively.
