Amarillo Sod Poodles News Release
Amarillo, Texas - Despite a late comeback attempt, the Amarillo Calf Fries dropped their Thursday night contest against the San Antonio Missions 12-10. Two five-run innings from the Missions proved too much for Amarillo to navigate as Amarilo dropped the first game of the series.
Amarillo was able to strike first for the first time this series. After a scoreless first, Kevin Graham plated two with his second inning opposite field trot around the bases. Amarillo made it a three-run game in the third with A.J. Vukovich coming around to score on a wild pitch. After drawing a one-out walk, he was moved to third with the help of a single and hit by pitch to load the bases.
LHP Yu-Min Lin cruised through the first four innings on the mound for Amarillo. He allowed just two hits through the first four and navigated around three walks to keep the Missions off the board while racking up seven strikeouts. His eighth punchout of the night started the fifth before the trouble came. His fourth walk preceded the third hit the Missions got off him. A double off the bat of Connor Hollis was compounded by a pair of Amarillo errors on the same play to help score San Antonio's first run. The fourth and final hit surrendered by Lin made it a 3-2 game before Amarillo brought on Will Mabrey. A double and three-run home run flipped it to a 5-2 Amarillo deficit. The Missions added a run in the sixth and seventh to pull even farther away as Amarillo still sat on three runs.
Another five-run inning, this time in the top of the eighth pushed San Antonio out in front by nine runs. Amarillo responded in a big way as the comeback bid was on.
Amarillo sent all nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the eighth. Two walks, and five singles in the inning, including RBI singles by Jancarlos Cintron and Caleb Roberts sandwiched a two-RBI single from A.J. Vukovich to bring the Calf Fries within shouting distance at 12-7. Gerrardo Gutierrez spun a scoreless top of the ninth to send the bats right back to work in the last half-inning.
Leading off the inning for the second time in as many innings, Graham collected his second hit of the night with a single. Jesus Valdez drew a one-out walk to turn the lineup back over to the top. Cintron delivered with a three-run home run to make it a two-run game. Tim Tawa drew his third free pass of the night, this time a two-out walk to keep the comeback hopes alive for Roberts. Serving as the tying run, a first-pitch groundout ended the comeback attempt for Amarillo.
Amarillo and San Antonio continue the last series of the first half on Friday night. RHP Billy Corcoran (2-2, 2.36 ERA) will take the mound for Amarillo against LHP Robby Snelling (1-6, 5.00 ERA) and the Missions. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
NOTES:
J-SEE-YA: Jancarlos Cintron launched his first home run of the season and his first since August 15, 2023, while he was on a rehab assignment in the Arizona Complex League. The ninth-inning three-run homer ended a spell of 50 games between home runs for Cintron. He finished Thursday's game 2-for-6 with the home run, four RBI, and two runs scored. Over his last 50 games, Cintron had racked up 81 hits and 20 total XBH without a home run until Thursday night. It was his 13th career home run with Amarillo and 33rd overall of his professional game.
ROBINS-HIM: Kristian Robinson delivered his fifth multi-hit game of the year in 43 games played. The D-backs' no. 17-rated prospect ended the game 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored. He was one of four Amarillo players to have multi-hit games. For Robinson, it ended a 12-game spell since his last multi-hit game.
HOW YU DOIN': Yu-Min Lin finished his first start in HODGETOWN since April 17th by going 4.1 IP while allowing just four hits and had three earned runs charged to him. He struck out eight batters while issuing four free passes in a bit of a mixed bag for the D-backs' no. 4-rated prospect as he continues to work back after 48 days on the IL. It was the sixth time in 17 total games in Double-A that Lin had at least eight strikeouts. He set his Double-A high with 10 strikeouts during his second start of the season on the road in Midland on April 11th.
TICK-TOK'IN AT HODGETOWN: The 3:38 time of the game on Thursday was the longest game of the season for Amarillo. It topped the previous high of 3:20 which these two teams played in the second game of the season on April 6th in which San Antonio won 18-5.
