Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-Cal Petersen was recognized as the United States Hockey League's Reebok Goaltender of the Week on Monday, marking the second straight week a Waterloo Black Hawk netminder has claimed the award.

Petersen started and won games on three consecutive days over the Thanksgiving weekend. The Notre Dame recruit stopped 29 shots Thursday during a 3-2 victory over the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders before blanking Cedar Rapids the next night while facing 21 chances in a 3-0 road shutout. Saturday, Petersen made three Waterloo goals stand up again, delivering 30 saves in a 3-2 decision versus the Sioux City Musketeers. For the weekend, the Waterloo native stopped 95.2% of the shots he faced.

Last Monday, the USHL conferred co-Goaltender of the Week status on the Hawks' Mathias Israelsson, as well as Cale Morris of the Chicago Steel. With this week's announcement, a Waterloo player has been designated the winner or co-winner of a weekly league award on six occasions in 2013/14.

For the season, Petersen is tied for the USHL lead in victories with 11. His 2.44 goals-against average and 92% save percentage each rank fifth in the league. Friday's shutout was the fourth in 53 career regular season appearances by the Buffalo Sabres draft pick. With 35 wins since first stepping onto USHL ice in December of 2011, Petersen ranks third in career victories among goalies during the Hawks junior era. He was the Goaltender or co-Goaltender of the Week twice last year.

Waterloo takes the ice next against the Tri-City Storm on Thursday. The game will be the Hawks' first Sports Swap night; $7 tickets are available with the exchange of unused professional or college baseball, football, or basketball tickets. It's also an iWireless College Night, with $7 advanced purchase tickets for students with ID. For more information, call the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
