By the Numbers: Lions Face the Quakes
August 30, 2019 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Orlando City SC News Release
0-1 - Get to two
If you can get to two goals in an Orlando City game, odds are you're going home with three points. The Lions have allowed two goals or more just once in their past nine MLS games, including five straight conceding one or fewer. Conversely, Orlando have only scored two goals in one of those nine games, a 2-0 win against FC Dallas.
65 - Starting fast
Last year's game against San Jose featured the fastest goal in Orlando City history, as Chris Mueller struck just 65 seconds into the game to put the Lions ahead at Exploria Stadium. The Quakes never recovered as Orlando went on to win the game 3-2 for their fourth victory in a row. It was Mueller's second career goal as a professional- his next will be his tenth.
1-0-3 - Orlando vs. San Jose
Last year's win was the first for either side in the series. All three previous games had ended in draws, with San Jose coming back to tie every time, including twice in 2016. San Jose have never even held a lead against Orlando City.
155 - King Wondo
San Jose striker Chris Wondolowski has enjoyed a minor renaissance in 2019, setting the all-time MLS goals record along the way. Wondo is up to 155 goals in his MLS career, with 11 coming this season in just 1549 minutes. The American international is scoring .635 goals per 90 minutes, his best rate since his 27-goal MVP campaign in 2012. 2 of Wondo's 155 goals have come against Orlando City, both equalizing for the Quakes (in 2015 and 2017) after Orlando took a 1-0 lead.
+24 - San Jose improvement
Much has been made, and deservedly so, of Orlando City's vast improvement over last season- the Lions are tied with Shield runaways LAFC for the biggest GD difference from 2018 to 2019 at +30. San Jose's turnaround has been nearly as impressive, though, as the Quakes have been 24 goals better in 2019, good for fourth in the league behind Orlando, LAFC, and Minnesota United. The Quakes have had a good bit more luck than the Lions in turning those goals into points- while Orlando have six more points than they did last season (with six games to play), San Jose are already a whopping 20 points improved with seven games remaining.
