Mason Toye and Hassani Dotson Called up to Us U23 National Team
August 30, 2019 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Minnesota United FC News Release
GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - U.S. Under 23 Men's National Team head coach Jason Kreis has named the Loons' second-year striker Mason Toye and rookie midfielder Hassani Dotson to the 24-player roster to face Japan on September 9 in Chula Vista, California. Toye and Dotson will join the team at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center following Minnesota United's game against LAFC.
Twenty-year-old Toye has enjoyed a breakout season in his second year in MLS, scoring his first professional goal in the Round of 16 of the U.S Open Cup against reigning champion Houston Dynamo on June 18, and then scoring his first MLS goal in the Loons 7-1 rout of FC Cincinnati on June 29. Since then, Toye has scored four more goals - including the game-winner in the U.S. Open Cup Semifinal against Portland Timbers - and provided three assists. Mason Toye is averaging 0.89 goals per 90 minutes played and a 26.7 percent scoring rate, placing him in the league's top 10 in both categories.
Since the summer international break, 22-year-old Dotson has found his way into the Loons' lineup in three different positions, right and left back and central midfield. The second-round draft pick was the first rookie this season to earn MLS minutes and score, knocking in his first MLS goal on June 2 versus Philadelphia Union. He's followed up with two more goals and strong defensive work in every position he's played in.
The match against Japan represents another step in the U23 MNT's journey to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games as the USA aims to qualify for its first Men's Olympic Tournament since 2008. COCACAF recently announced that the 2020 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship will be held March 20 - April 1 in Guadalajara, Mexico. That tournament will send two teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean to Tokyo.
