EL PASO, Texas â The El Paso Buzzards and Capistrano Elementary School are teaming up for the holidays. On Wednesday afternoon, Buzzards' players Rhett Dudley, Russ Guzior, Jeff Potter and Mike Zeibaq will present a cash donation on behalf of Buzzards staff and players to help Capistrano Elementary School's most needy students this holiday season. The local media is invited to come join in this event beginning at 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 18th at Capistrano Elementary School located at 240 Mecca Street.
"The Buzzards are pleased to sponsor the children of Capistrano Elementary School this holiday season," said Buzzards' general manager Jamie Reeve. "As a part of our team's community focus, our staff and players are committed to supporting local children in a variety of capacities including assisting in the purchase of basic needs."
The donation will help the school purchase basic items such as school and gym uniforms, school supplies and winter weather necessities. Capistrano Elementary School is one of El Paso's most disadvantaged schools. Located in the Lower Valley, Capistrano's student teacher ratio is 16:1 and the school has one of the lowest annual per pupil expenditures in the city.
The players will visit the students Wednesday afternoon for approximately two hours and will speak on the importance of education. The attending players all have college degrees or credits toward a degree and a keen interest in community service. They will also take time to sign autographs and take pictures with the students. As well, all of the school's students and staff will be the guests of the Buzzards at the team's upcoming home game on Saturday, Dec. 21.
"This will be a wonderful event for the children and their families," said Capistrano Elementary Principal Emilio Quiroz. "The Buzzards have been very generous and we appreciate everything they have done for our students this holiday season."
Tickets are now on sale for this weekend's games: Friday, Dec. 20 vs. the New Mexico Scorpions and Saturday, Dec. 21 vs. the San Angelo Saints.
