Burnevik and Musser Shine, Caps Down Fargo 3-2
January 22, 2024 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Madison Capitols News Release
Madison looked to split a series in Fargo on Saturday night following a 5-2 loss on Friday. In front of a sold out crowd at Scheels Arena, Madison left the crowd stunned in the final minute of the game capturing the team's 16th win of the season.
In a night where two of the top goaltenders in the league battled, Carsen Musser for the Capitols and Hampton Slukynsky for the Force, no one was shocked when the game ran scoreless through the first twenty minutes.
Just past the half way point of the second period, Madison was able to sneak two goals past the Fargo netminder. Austin Burnevik found the first goal of the night for his 22nd of the season. Chris Delaney and Colton Jamieson picked up assists on the tally.
A minute and change after the Burnevik tally, Andrew Kuzma picked up his second of the weekend on a break. He beat Slukynsky on the blocker side to give the Capitols a 2-0 lead. Diego Johnson and Aiden Long found the assists on the goal. The assist for Johnson gave him his first USHL point.
Similar to how the Capitols tied things at two on Friday night, Fargo was able to do the same on Saturday with a goal in the second and a goal in the third. This led to a tight contest down the stretch.
Coming off of a Fargo timeout, the Capitols had a draw in the offensive zone with the top line of Delaney-Rullers-Burnevik on the ice. Rullers and Delaney won the draw back to Burnevik who had his first shot blocked. Luckily for him, the miss came back to him where he riffled home the game winning goal for Madison with 46 seconds left.
Carsen Musser was able to keep the Force at bay on the defensive end of the ice on their push with the extra attacker. Musser stopped 37 of 39 Fargo shots on Saturday.
Madison improves to 16-10-4-2 on the season, maintaining their eight point advantage over fifth place in the Eastern Conference.
The Capitols return home to face off against the Tri-City Storm the following weekend on the 26th and 27th. On Friday, the 26th, it's another $1 Beer Night presented by Coors Light. Then, on Saturday, the 27th, it's our annual What If Night presented by MG&E. The Capitols will rebrand to a local historical franchise for one night only. Stay tuned to our social media channels for the release of those jerseys. Tickets for both nights, and all future games, can be found at tickets.madcapshockey.com.
