Burnett, Orloff Named to All-Star Team

TROY, NY - Two members of the ValleyCats have been selected to represent Tri-City in the 2010 New York-Penn League All-Star Game. Infielders *Tyler Burnett* and *Ben Orloff* have recieved All-Star honors and will take part in the event at Staten Island on Tuesday, August 17. Burnett has been an on-base machine for the ValleyCats this season. The infielder leads the team with a .402 on-base percentage and has walked 27 times, fourth-most in the league. Most impressively, he has reached base safely in each of his last 32 games - a streak that dates back to June 30. Burnett's is the longest such streak in the NYPL this year, eight games more than anyone else has managed to date.
The rookie has played third base for most of his career but transitioned to a role as Tri-City's starting first baseman; he will be playing in the All-Star Game at his natural position. Burnett has shown some pop as well this season - his 13 doubles are two off the league lead. He has been the ValleyCats' most complete hitter this season, topping the team with a .848 OPS.
Orloff is spending his second season in Troy. The middle infielder was plagued by tendonitis in his throwing elbow last season and struggled to a .150 batting average in 28 games, but has had much more success in his second attempt. Now fully healthy, he has played at least seven games at third base, shortstop and second base, and was named to the All-Star Team at the latter.
The versatile infielder leads the ValleyCats with a .316 batting average, good for third place among NYPL middle infielders. Power is not Orloff's strength, as he has only 9 RBI and two extra-base hits (both doubles), but boasts strong speed. He has stolen eight bases this season and paces the team with 30 runs scored.
Each year, the best players from the NYPL National League affiliates take on All-Stars from the AL affiliates. Orloff and Burnett will join 25 other players from NL affiliates and try to avenge last year's 4-2 AL victory. The 2008 All-Star Game was hosted at Joe Bruno Stadium, where the NL won 4-3 on hometown hero David Flores's walkoff double.
