State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE - State College Spikes pitching did not allow a hit until the fifth inning, and Walker Gourley provided a pair of crucial hits in a 2-1 victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats on Saturday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
State College (25-24) starter Colton Cain and reliever Kevin Decker (4-1) combined to hold Tri-City (21-27) out of the hit column until shortstop Oscar Figueroa delivered a single to left field. Cain allowed just two walks in the game and the only ValleyCats run, which scored without the benefit of a hit in the second inning.
The Spikes came back in the fifth, however, with Gourley scoring on Miguel Mendez's RBI single after dropping down a bunt single of his own. State College then went ahead in the sixth inning, when Gourley scored Matt Curry with an RBI single.
The win was the third in a row for the Spikes, who wore special pink jerseys for Paint the Park Pink Night, presented by Mount Nittany Medical Center. The jerseys were auctioned off during the game to benefit the Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center, with the winning bidders receiving their jerseys after the game. State College also used special pink bats, which were auctioned off as well.
Curry and Adalberto Santos each started on Saturday after learning they had been selected for the 2010 New York-Penn League All-Star Game, to be played in Staten Island on August 17th. Jhonathan Ramos was also named to represent the Spikes on the National League affiliates' squad.
Decker earned the victory with four scoreless innings of middle relief, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out two. Justin Ennis (2) picked up the save after yielding just one hit over two innings of work to finish off the win.
Tri-City starter Jake Buchanan (3-3) took the loss after allowing both Spikes runs on five hits and two walks while striking out one.
Sunday, the Spikes and ValleyCats meet at 6:05 p.m. for their second game of a three-game series at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College will send left-hander Zac Fuesser (0-1) to the mound, while Tri-City counters with right-hander David Martinez (3-2).
It's a Summer Blast-Off Sunday at the park, presented by the Centre Daily Times, with a spectacular post-game FIREWORKS display presented by T&B Medical. Before the game, fans can bring their gloves and play catch on the field, and after the game, kids can run the bases courtesy of HealthSouth Nittany Valley Rehabilitation Hospital. Plus, it's Bellefonte Community Night, celebrating the history and heritage of the home of governors.
Kids 12 and under are also invited to the second annual Youth Soccer Clinic at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Sunday. Registration for the event begins at 10:30 a.m., and admission is free with a ticket to Sunday night's game. The clinic will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the Juniata College men's and women's soccer programs hosting the event with on-field instruction and drills.
