DALLAS - The Dallas Burn announced today that the team has acquired goalkeeper D.J. Countess and a 2nd round selection in next year's draft from the MetroStars. In return, the MetroStars got recently acquired midfielder Winston Griffiths and the Burn's 1st round selection in next year's draft.

"We are obviously very excited to have the top young goalkeeper in this country join our squad," said Burn Head Coach Mike Jeffries. "D.J. has played in a number of high-level international tournaments as a youth and has always been one of the top-rated players. He will be a valuable asset to the Burn."

Countess, 20, was acquired by the MetroStars on August 7, 2001 in a weighted lottery among MLS teams. He has started all 37 of his career games with the United States U-20 National Team and is the starting goalkeeper for the U.S. Olympic Team. Countess started 21 games with the U-20 side in 2001, posting a 10-7-4 record and a 1.00 goals-against average. In addition to his play with the U-20 team, Countess was also the starting goalkeeper for the U-17 team that finished fourth at the U-17 World Championships in New Zealand in 1999.

Countess, a native of Sacramento, CA, played one season at UCLA (2000) before joining the Pro-40 program, playing in 19 games for the Bruins and posting a 1.02 goals-against average, the second-best mark in the Pac-10 Conference.

As a member of Pro-40, Countess will not count against the Burn's roster limit.
