Antonio Martinez Scores One Goal and Adds Assist in International Friendly
DALLAS - The Dallas Burn scored three first half goals en route to a 3-0 victory over WC Connection FC tonight before a standing room only crowd at the University of Texas at Dallas. W Connection FC, the 2001 Caribbean champions, are currently competing in a home-and-away series vs. the Kansas City Wizards in the Champions Cup, with the second leg of the tournament Saturday in Kansas City.
Dallas opened the scoring just ten minutes into the match on a great effort by Antonio Martinez. Martinez beat two W Connection FC defenders down the left flank and brought the ball to the edge of the box. He then sent a cross to the far post, with an on-rushing Ronald Cerritos one-timing a shot from about five yards out. After several near-misses, the Burn doubled the lead in the 29th minute. Jason Kreis received the ball down the left side and dribbled toward the end line. With W Connection FC goalkeeper Alejandro Figueroa expecting a cross, Kreis instead bent the ball toward the near post. Figueroa was able to get his hand to the shot, but could not keep it from trickling over the line. Dallas added one just before the half, with Martinez again figuring in the scoring. Martinez beat one defender at the corner of the box and spun around another before sending a dipping left-footer into the far right side netting for a 3-0 halftime lead.
W Connection FC had two glorious chances to pull one back early in the second half. The first came in the 65th minute as Titus Elva got free at the top of the box and unleashed a shot that caromed off of the crossbar. The second came in the 74th minute after Burn defender Josue Mayard was whistled for a hand ball in the box. Jose Luis Seabra sent the ball wide of the net, however, to preserve the shutout.
