Round Rock Express News Release
BURKE OK: Express All Star second baseman, Chris Burke, joined the rest of the team this morning as they headed to Tulsa to begin an eight-game road trip. Burke was hit in the jaw by an errant throw as he was running to first base in Monday night's game. Burke was taken to a local hospital where results showed no broken bones in the jaw.
EXPRESS ALUMNI REPORT: This week's alumni report is also a medical report on some of the stars who have gone through Round Rock on their way to Houston.
Oswalt update
Roy Oswalt threw on the side Tuesday and will throw off a mound Friday for the first time since he suffered his third groin strain July 29. If all goes well, Oswalt will throw three bullpen sessions and a simulated game before potentially coming off the disabled list, Jimy Williams said.
"I don't know if he's going to be back," Williams said, "but he's trying."
Oswalt has made tremendous strides.
"Right now I'm not experiencing much pain," he said. "The tilt on the mound just adds more pressure with the incline, so the big test will be Friday."
Lane pulls through
There were times this season Jason Lane believed he would never be healthy enough to earn a call to the majors again. Because of a lower abdominal strain -- also referred to as a sports hernia -- Lane's season at Class AAA New Orleans was disrupted several times from April 24 until the middle of July.
"You got a lot of time to think and you wonder why it's happening like this," Lane said after joining the Astros for the first time this year Tuesday. "For a while there it got bad. I hit bottom a couple times. There was nothing I could do. It was just tough."
Lane earned the promotion by hitting .295 (72-for-244) with seven home runs and 39 RBIs over 70 games.
Hernandez throws
Lefthander Carlos Hernandez, who is recovering from season-ending shoulder surgery he had in February, threw his curveball, changeup and fastball off the mound for 12 minutes Tuesday.
Hernandez returned Monday from Venezuela, where he had spent the previous two weeks visiting with his newborn son Carlos Jr., who was born early this month. Hernandez has been throwing fastballs off the mound for three weeks, and he added curveballs and changeups to his workouts Thursday in Venezuela.
"I threw and felt well," he said. "I'm feeling better. I know there will be ups and downs, but I'm making progress."
EXPRESS FINAL HOMESTAND: The final four Express games of the 2003 season will be at The Dell Diamond starting next Thursday, August 28th against the San Antonio Missions. The homestand starts with "Thirsty Thursday" (1/2 price beer & $1 sodas), then continues with "Friday Fireworks" and on Saturday, "Jersey-Off-The-Back Night." The homestand ends with "Fan Appreciation Night" and a post-game Fireworks show on Sunday.
