Cody Ransom and Lance Niekro homered and Kirk Rueter allowed just one hit over 4.2 innings Tuesday night as Fresno topped Tucson 4-0 at Grizzlies Stadium in the opener of a five-game series.
Ransom started the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run off Tucson starter Mike Gosling.
Niekro's two-run shot in the fifth inning increased the lead to 3-0.
Rueter was on a rehab assignment from San Francisco. The left-hander went 4.2 innings, allowing just one single while striking out six, throwing 75 pitches.
Joe Horgan threw 2.1 perfect innings in relief of Rueter to earn his seventh win. Gosling allowed ten hits and three runs in four innings of work as he suffered the loss and dropped to 9-10.
Tucson fell to 66-65. The Sidewinders and Grizzlies will meet in the second game of the five-game series Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Edgar Gonzalez (7-6 4.02) will start for Tucson. Nick Lowry (0-0 2.35).
