TRAVERSE CITY, MI ¡V The Traverse City Beach Bums dropped a 4-2 contest to the Florence Freedom at Wuerfel Park on Wednesday night.
Pete McEneaney made a spot start in place of David Nathanson, who missed the game with a back injury. Nathanson is expected to make his next start, his turn in the rotation was skipped. Florence scored against the spot starter in the first as Garth McKinney scored on a fielder¡¦s choice.
The Freedom opened a 4-0 lead by plating three unearned runs in the second. McKinney drove in a run with a single following a two-out error and Kelly Hunt knocked in two more runs with a bases loaded single. Hunt drove in three runs in the game. Pete McEneaney threw five innings in his first professional start and allowed only one earned run. He walked three and struck out two while scattering six hits but was saddled with the loss.
The Beach Bums snapped a scoreless streak by plating an unearned run in the bottom of the second to pull within 4-1 without a hit. Brad Miller and Jeff Brown drew two-out walks and Miller was able to score on an error by Florence second baseman Billy Mottram.
Traverse City pulled to within 4-2 with a run in the sixth against Florence starter Andy Clark. Kyle Maunus contributed a one-out single and scored on a Brad Miller double. Clark earned his fifth win after working 5.2 innings as the Freedom won their fourth in a row for the first time this season. Cody Castle pitched the ninth to notch his 11th save.
Brad Miller was chosen as the Beach Bums Player of the Game. Miller had two of the five Traverse City hits, finishing 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, a walk, a run, and an RBI. Brad Roblin, Kyle Maunus, and Patrick Perry also tallied hits in the game. Beach Bums hitters drew six walks.
The Beach Bums (31-26) will open a series with the Washington Wild Things tomorrow night at 7:05 pm as the two rivals meet for the final time this season. All-Star LHP Ryan Gehring (4-3, 2.59) gets the ball for the Beach Bums while Washington will send RHP J.J. Hollenbeck (3-3, 3.63).
