River City Rascals News Release
O'Fallon, MO - Three long balls were not enough as the Southern Illinois Miners took two of three in O'Fallon with a 5-4 win over the River City Rascals Wednesday night.
Chris Raniere and Ryan Wehrle went back to back in the seventh inning and Jeff Miller made it a one run game with his twelfth of the season in the bottom of the ninth, all though were solo home runs.
The early innings belonged to the Miners as they scored one run in each of the second, third and fourth innings against Scott Fogelson. Willie Keene hit his tenth home run of the season in the fourth inning for Southern Illinois as they built a 3-0 lead.
The Rascals first hit off right hander Brett Scarpetta, who started for the Miners, did not come until the fourth inning as he went 6.2 innings for the win with six strikeouts.
Scarpetta fell into trouble with the Miners leading 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs, Raniere pinch hit for Carlos Newman and homered on the first pitch he saw. Wehrle made it 5-3 with his fourth home run in the next at-bat. That would be all for Scarpetta.
Griffen Bailey came in for the Miners in the eighth inning and retired the Rascals in order. Bailey stayed in for the ninth and almost blew the save.
With one out, Miller connected on his first hit after the all-star break and sent a towering shot over the âBig Dog Wall' in right to cut the lead to 5-4. Will Basom then followed with a single to left. Basom would be pulled for a pinch runner in Jacob DeBoer. With Raniere at the plate and one out, DeBoer tested Brendan Akashian, and on a fastball Akashian nailed DeBoer at second for the second out. Raniere would go on to ground out to end the game.
Fogelson (2-6) went 5.2 innings for the Rascals, allowing eight hits and five earned runs. Scarpetta (3-2) picked up his third win of the season with Bailey notching his second save.
