Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums(37-50), after trailing early, could not finish a valiant comeback, losing to the Lake Erie Crushers(44-45), by the final score of 5-4.
After both teams went scoreless after three, Lake Erie pulled off a big inning in the fourth. With the bases loaded and one out, Bryan De La Rosa hit an RBI single, Max Casper drove in two with a double to left, then Robb Paller hit an RBI groundout. They added a run in the fifth on an Eric Grabe RBI sacrifice fly to make it 5-0.
In the sixth, the Beach Bums started to chip away at the lead. Jose Vargas hit a double to left then Will Kengor hit a ground-rule double, driving in Vargas for their first run. Traverse City then brought nine men to the plate in the eighth inning, starting with a lead-off single by Jeff DeBlieux. Ryan Bottger followed with a single of his own then Jose Vargas slammed a two-run double, scoring both DeBlieux and Bottger. After Kengor moved Vargas to third on a grounder, Steven Patterson drove him in with an RBI infield hit. The Beach Bums would load the bases again but could not bring home the tying run.
Josh Heddinger picked up the win for Lake Erie to improve to 4-5. His first seven innings were very good before scuffling in the eighth, only getting one out in the frame. He allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks, while striking out four. Benjamin Libuda gutted his way through five but suffers the loss. He gave up five runs on five hits and four walks, and falls to 3-5. James Ball replaced Libuda in the sixth and went three scoreless innings in an effort to keep the Beach Bums in the game.
